Hihhei! Kovasti luulin, että tämä kausi päättyisi olkapään leikkaukseen, mutta kuinka väärässä olinkaan! Sveitsistä Suomeen kotiuduttua ei Pyhällä tai Rovaniemellä ollut paljoa loppukevään merkkejä ilmassa, ja päässä pyöri vaan ajatus että vitsit kun sukset jäi meidän autoon joka oli matkalla Ruotsiin. Noh muutama päivä oli hyvä ottaa iisisti, kunnes kaasujalka ja skinnausniksat painoi sen verran pahasti, että täytyi kääntää auton nokka kohti Luleåta ja lähteä hakemaan talvikamat takaisin. Olkapää parani hyvällä tahdilla, ja kun tikeistä pääsi eroon ja haavat oli ummessa, lähdettiin kevyelle ja varovaiselle skinnaukselle Ounasvaaralle. Kaikki toimi paremmin kuin hyvin eikä olkapää kipeytynyt yhtään, joten seuraavaksi saatiin tyttöjen kanssa ajatus…lähdetään pohjoiseen hiihtovaellukselle nauttimaan kunnon kevätkeleistä!

Hello! I really thought that this season would be over for me after my shoulder operation but how wrong I was! When I got back home to northern Finland from Switzerland there were really no signs of late spring here and I started to regret that I didn’t bring my skis with me…so after a week at home I had to drive to Sweden to get my skis and winter gear back! My shoulder was healing well and when I got the stiches off and the wounds were healed I went for a really easy ski tour at my home hill in Rovaniemi. It felt really good so we got an idea with girls…we should do an overnight ski tour in the wilderness of Finnish Lapland and take everything out of the amazing spring conditions!

Aikaa vaellukselle meillä oli vaan viikonloppu, missä ajassa kuitenkin ehti tosi paljon. Loistavaa viikonloppuretkeilyä pohjoisessa asuville! Ja miksei etelässäkin, jos lentelee lähemmäksi ensin. Perjantaina iltapäivällä pakattiin Merlen kanssa auto, ja käytiin hakemassa Kristiina aka Skriba suoraan tentistä kyytiin ja suunnattiin Kilpisjärvelle. Perillä oltiin sen verran myöhään, että yötä myöten skinnailu ei ollut suunnitelmissa, joten majoituttiin Lapland Hotel Kilpiksessä ensimmäinen yö. Liikkeellä oltiin 12. toukokuuta, jolloin turresesonki alkaa olla jo ohi ja kelkkailukausikin päättynyt. Rantasaunan kautta nukkumaan ja seuraavana aaamuna freessinä tankkaamaan hotellin aamupalalle. Sen jälkeen suunnattiin Kilpisjärven Luontokeskuksen parkkipaikalle, mihin jätettiin auton ja vaihdettiin sukset alle. Liikkeellä oltiin kaikki ihan perus laskukamoilla ja skineillä, ei kevyimmät eikä todellakaan nopeimmat välineet edetä suht tasaisella reitillä, mutta toimi meille! Suuntana oli Termisjärven autio-/varaustupa Termisjärven rannalla, n. 14km päässä autotieltä, ja reittinä talvella kulkeva kelkkareitti.

We had only one weekend to do this trip, but it was enough time to do a lot. On friday afternoon me and Merle packed the car and picked up Kristiina straight after her test at the uni. We drove up to Kilpisjärvi, a little village really close to the boarder of Norway and Finland. We slept overnight at the local hotel since we got there quite late. And started the next morning with a really good hotel breakfast before starting the tour 😉 It was already 12th of May so the tourist season was over and it was not legal anymore to drive with snowmobiles. We left our car at the parking close to the Kilpisjärvi Luontokeskus (”Nature center”) and put our skis on. We all had our normal skiing gear with skins, not the lightest and def not the fastest equipment on the quite flat tour, but it worked well for us. Our destination was a little hut by the Termisjärvi lake about 14km away and we took the way that the snowmobiles use in the winter.

Liikkeellä oltiin täysin retkeilymielellä, tarkoituksena nauttia liikkumisesta, maisemista, valosta ja lumesta! Itsellä oli leikkauksesta aikaa 2,5 viikkoa ja vasen käsi kulki tiiviisti mitellassa, joten oma skinnaaminen tapahtui yhdellä kädellä ja rauhallisesti. Laskut on omalta osalta täysi mahdottomuus vielä seuraavat 3 kk. Meistä kukaan ei aikaisemmin ollut hiihtovaelluksella tai kyseisellä tuvalla käynyt, joten oli kivaa ihmetellä yhdessä upeita maisemia matkalla! Yksi iso kunnon pilvi sattui matkalla kohdalle, ehkä ihan meidän onneksi ettei tajuttu kuinka pitkällä ja suoralla tasamaalla mentiin, haha. Pilvestä kun päästiin alkoi tupa näkyä jo, tosin aika kaukana, ja sitten hiihdettiin, hiihdettiin ja hiihdettiin…….Kunnes lopulta päästiin perille! Pilvet kaikkosi ja keli oli mahtava, joten kööri mökin päätyyn tuulensuojaiselle paikalle penkeille nautiskelemaan. Pitkästä aikaa oli mukavaa kuunnella millaista oikea hiljaisuus on! Perillä oltiin iltapäivällä, ja ilta vietettiin ulkona ja mökissä tsillaillen, ruokaa laittaen ja viereisellä törmällä seikkailevaa kettua ja poroja kattellen. Ihanaa!

Our goal for the trip was just to go for a little adventure, to do some ski touring and enjoy the light, landscapes and snow. It was only 2,5 weeks after my operation so I had to carry my left arm tight in a mitella and tour with one arm and take it easy. It will take another three months for me to be able to ski for real again. None of us had done an overnight tour before or seen the hut or the area around it before so it was so fun to enjoy the views together. It was really good weather except for a little while when we got a good thick cloud around us. But it was fortunate since we didn’t realize how long and flat the part was where we were just then haha. Then we finally started to see the hut but it took a looong time and a lot of skinning before we finally arrived there. The location was amazing with the lake and the mountains and the sky got clear! We took some benches and sat out in the sun and just enjoyed the moment, place and real silence. We spent the evening cooking and watching a fox and some reindeer hanging around on the slopeside next to the hut. Amaazing!

Mitään muita suunnitelmia kuin hiihdellä tuvalle ja takaisin ei ollut, vaan kaikki muu tapahtui fiiliksen mukaan. Seuraavana aamuna nukuttiin pitkään ja noustiin jälleen hienoon auringonpaisteeseen. Aamupäivästä lähdettiin hiihtelemään takaisin kohti Kilpisjärveä, mutta tällä kertaa reittivalintana nousu tuvan takana olevien Salmivaarojen päälle, ja harjanteita pitkin hiihdeltiin takaisin kohti Tsahkaljärveä. Vaarojen päältä oli hienot maisemat kun hanget kimalteli timantteina ja tunturit näytti aivan maagisilta! Uniikkeja maisemia mitä ei kyllä mistään muualta löydä, kauneinta Suomea! Matkalla oli yksi loiva ja lyhyt lasku, jonka tytöt laski ja mie aurailin alas. Sitten takaisin kelkkareitille ja hiihtelyä takaisin Luontokeskukselle. Matkaan meni mennessä n.4 tuntia ja tullessa n.5 tuntia lyhyellä tauolla, ja kilometrejä kertyi n.30. Huippu reissu ja niin älyttömät tuurit kelien kanssa! Kyllä Kilpisjärven erämaa on hienoa aluetta. Kotiin lähdettiin Kilpparin kaupan kautta jäätelöt kädessä, kaikki muu paitsi leikattu olkapää kipeänä ja hymy palaneella naamalla, this is life!

We didn’t have any other plans than to just skitour to the hut and back and do everything else by the feeling. We slep late the next morning and woke up to another sunny day. We started our way back around midday and took another route this time, we skinned up to Salmivaarat, a hill line behind the hut. We followed the ridge and the views from the top were so spectacular. Everything was so round and white and glittering in the sunshine! Almost magical how something can look so beautiful, for me it was the most beautiful landscape that I have ever seen in Finland. There was one short and mellow run down that the girls skied and I snowplowed. Then we headed back to the route that took us back to the main road and to our car. The tour to the hut took around four hours and back about five hours with a short break, and it was about 30km long in total. We started our journey back home with ice creams on our hands and big smiles on our burned faces, this is life! And no pain in my shoulder, just in every other part of my body ;D

Iso suositus lähteä pohjoiseen nautiskelemaan vielä kevään lämpimistä, valoisista ja lumisista maisemista!

Meillä on vajaa viikko aikaa Tromssaan muuttoon ja sielläkin vielä kelit näyttää olevan kohdillaan, joten ehkä tätä kautta ei uskallakaan julistaakaan vielä päättyneeksi 😉

This kind of trip I would really recommend for everyone to do! Amazing landscapes, midnight sun and not too cold anymore, such a perfect weekend getaway.

Our trip/move to Tromsö is getting closer too and it looks like the conditions there are still really good, so I might not say yet if this season is over 😉
