Hyvää marraskuuta pimeästä mutta lumisesta Pohjois-Norjasta! Nyt on GoExpo Winteristä ja Vapaalaskufestivaaleista selvitty ja päästy takaisin kodin rauhaan vuorien ja vuonojen keskelle Tromssaan. Vapaalaskuiltamat oli yhtä kovat kekkerit kuin aina, ja oli mukava päästä näkemään porukkaa ja jauhamaan laskujutuista. Uusi konsepti toimi tosi hyvin, isot kiitokset Artulle joka jaksaa vuodesta toiseen järjestää! Laskuniksat nousi entistä korkeammalle, vaikka tämä talvi mulla poikkeuksellisesti pyörähtikin käyntiin jo ennen festareita lokakuun loppupuolella Lyngenissä. Nyt siis vuorossa pientä throwbackia parin viikon takaiseen ja päivitystä lumitilanteesta Tromssan lähistöllä.

Hello, hello from dark but snowy Norway! Now we have survived the annual freeskiing event in Helsinki and got back home to peaceful Tromsø. After some days in the big city it feels good to be surrounded with all the mountains and fjords again even though it was super nice to see everyone, watch ski films and party. I got even more stoked about this season after the event in Helsinki despite that my season already started a few weeks ago at the end of October in Lyngen. So here’s a little throwback to “the” day and an update about the snow conditions at the moment in Tromsø.

Tänä kautena ”se” päivä sattui olemaan lokakuun 26. päivä. Tromssassa kiersi alkuun huhuja, ja muutama päivä myöhemmin myös ihan virallista tietoa Fri Flyt-sivustolla, että muutama paikallinen tyyppi oli käynyt Store Kjostindenillä ja jäätikkö oli kuorrutettu puuterilla. Sinne siis! Arpa osui kohdalle paremmin kuin hyvin, ja torstaille (joka oli myös minun viikon ainoa vapaapäivä töistä!), oli luvassa täydellistä keliä. Aamu alkoi aikaisella kavereiden kyytiin poimimisella ja Lyngenin lauttaan suuntaamalla. Liikkeelle lähdettiin ruotsalaisten Joelin, Ludwigin, Villiamin ja Jonin kanssa. Hyvä että on kavereita ketkä opiskelee Tromssassa ja pystyy irtautumaan arkipäiväseikkailuille. Tosin yhdelle jäsenistä nousi niin kova pyydakuume, että täytyi ottaa saikkua töistä, mutta jätetään nimi arvoitukseksi kuka se meistä oli ;D

The first real ski day for this season was 26th of October. We had heard some rumours that some local guys had been skiing in Store Kjostinden and that the glacier was filled with powder. Just a couple of days after that the Norwegian Fri Flyt page wrote an article about them so we had not other choice than head there too! Thursday, that was also my only day off from work that week (I’m so lucky), came with perfect weather so we had an early start from Tromsø with car towards the ferry to Lyngen. We were a group of five, me and four Swedish guys called Joel, Ludwig, Jon and Villiam. So good to have friends who study in Tromsø and can take some time off from school to go skiing. One of us got so high powder-fever that he had to take sick leave from work but that can stay as a secret who it was ;DJäätikön lähestyessä ilma alkoi viiletä, joten laitettiin lisää vaatetta päälle ja tsekattiin piipparit. The air got bit colder when we started to reach the glacier so we put more clothes on and checked our transceivers.

Vihdoin lumella! Täydellinen keli, -4c ja aurinkoa. Hankalaa uskoa, että oli vasta lokakuu. Perfect weather with no wind and -4c degrees. Hard to believe that it was October!

Store Kjostinden (1488m) Lyngenissä on yks tunnetuimpia alku- ja loppukauden laskumestoja juurikin jäätikön takia. Auto jätettiin Storurdan kohdille tien viereen parkkipaikalle, ja nousu aloitettiin heittämällä sukset ja monot reppuun ja aloittamalla jyrkkä ja kivinen nousu jäätikön reunalle, joka alkoi n. 750m korkeudessa. Matkaa taitettiin ylöspäin yhdessä auringon noustessa, ja lumirajalle päästessä alkoi valo ja maisemat hipoa täydellisyyttä. Jäätikköä ennen oli hieman lunta jo, mutta maasto tosi kivistä, joten jatkettiin kengät jalassa jäätikön reunalle asti. Jäätikön reunalle päästessä loksahti porukalla leuat, kyllä ne huhut pitivät vaan paikkaansa, pyydaa joka puolella! Joten ei muuta kuin sukset jalkaan ja skinnaamalla eteenpäin. Matkaa jatkettiin ylöspäin, ja valittiin lähteä kokeilemaan yhtä alueen ränneistä, mikä tosin ylempää on aika iso ja avoin. Kyseistä ränniä ei oltu vielä träkätty, lumi oli hyvää ja sitä oli paljon, mutta muuttui hieman epästabiiliksi ylempänä. Oltiin jo autossa sovittu, että tänään otetaan iisisti kun oli kauden eka päivä kaikille, joten päätettiin kääntyä ja laskea takaisin n. 900m korkeuteen. Huippu lasku, evästä mahaan ja skinit uudestaan alle. Uusi nousu varsinaiselle huipulle, ja sieltä lasku alas jäätikön reunalle asti. Kuvat puhukoot puolestaan, paljoa paremmin ei tätä kautta olisi voinut aloittaa!

Store Kjostinden (1488m above the sea level) in Lyngen is one of the most popular pre season and summer skiing spots due to the glacier. We left our car next to the road and started our hike with a steep and rocky bootback all the way to the altitude of 750m where the glacier starts. The sun was as fast as we were on the way up and everything looked so beautiful in the morning light. There was some snow before the glacier but the terrain was so rocky that we decided to walk all the way to the glacier. When we got there we got so surprised and excited, there was powder everywhere and it looked so good! We changed to skis and continued our way up skinning. We decided to go for one couloir that opens up quite a lot towards the top and it was not tracked yet. There was a lot of snow and it was good but got a bit unstable towards the top so we decided to turn around and ski back to about 900m of altitude. We had already decided in the car that we are going to take it easy today since it was the first day for everyone this season. We got a super nice run, had some lunch, and then put our skins back on skis and started to head towards the real top. Another amazing run in the afternoon light, the pictures can tell more. This day could not have been any better!

Iloisia ilmeitä kun Joelilta löytyi avaaamaton suklaalevy matkalla alas. Kivikkoa oli melko haastavaa mennä alaspäin, ja varmasti itse jokaisella oli aika hapoilla paikat jo tässä vaiheessa. Päivään kului reilu 8 tuntia ja ylämäkeä tuli n. 2,000 verttimetriä. Happy faces when Joel took out some chocolate on the way down. It was pretty hard to go down the really rocky part after a long day. The whole trip took us around 8 hours and we hiked/skinned up around 2,000 vertical meters.

Pari päivää tästä reissusta saapui Tromssaan ihan kunnon dumppi, ja jopa keskustan saarelle saatiin reilut 40cm kuivaa lunta. Yhtenä aamuna ehdittiin käydä Kvaløyalla Finnlandsfjelletillä aamupyydalla ennen töihin menoa, ja yhtenä päivänä rakentaan hynda läheisen minimäen kodan yli. Super hauskaa hommaa! Sen jälkeen lähdettiinkin Helsinkiin, ja takaisin tullessa olivat vesisateet vieneet lähes kaikki lumet merenpinnan tasolta. Nyt marraskuun puolivälin lähestyessä vuorilla on lunta, mutta nollan raja on heilunut välillä n.700-800m korkeudessa, joten kaikki lumi alempana on tällä hetkellä aika märkää, jäätynyttä tai ihan kaikkea mahdollista. Mutta ei aivan huono tilanne näin alkukaudeksi!

Just few days after this trip we got a huge dump in Tromsø. Even the city itself, that lies on a quite small island on the sea level, got around 40 cm of cold and light snow. One day we had time to shred some morning pow in Kvaløya before going to work, and another day we built a little kicker over a hut on a slope close to our home. Super fun times! After that we headed to Helsinki and when we got back the rain had destroyed almost all snow on the sea level. Now close to the middle of November there’s a lot of snow up on the mountains but the freezing level has been all the way up to 700-800m of altitude some days so the snow below that is wet, frozen or everything possible. But still not too bad for this time of the year!

Kaamoksen alkuun on enää kaksi viikkoa, joten kohta hiihdellään vain otsalamppu päässä. Mutta ei se mittään, erilaista, hauskaa ja haastavaa sekin on 🙂

Thanks to Joel, Ludwig, Jon and Villiam for an amazing day that was definitely the best first ski day as long as I can remember! Thanks also to Villiam for all the great photos! Now it’s only two weeks left until the polar night starts. Then we are mostly skiing with a head torch but that is exciting and challenging too!
