Pre season shred in Verbier

Hola aurinkoisesta Verbieristä! Mestoille päästiin viikko sitten hieman viivästyneen lähdön jälkeen. Tarkoitus oli olla Verbierissä jo joulukuun alkupäivinä, mutta influenssan iskiessä lähtöä edeltävänä yönä ei seuraavaan viiteen päivään ei ollut toivoakaan että selviytyisin 3000 km ajomatkasta. Eliaksella alkoi sukat pyöriin jaloissa kun jouduttiin viivästyttämään lähtöä päivä päivältä, mutta vihdoin saatiin Deer Hunter aka meidän kesällä peuran syönyt auto pakattua, ja matka pääsi alkamaan! Sairastumisen takia missattiin varattu lautta ja muutkin matkalle tehdyt suunnitelmat, joten muuta tavoitetta ei ollut kun päästä ensin Luleåsta Göteborgiin. 17 tunnin ajelun jälkeen oltiin kohteessa, ja oli kyllä niin mukava yllätys kun kavereiden luona oli viinit ja ruuat valmiina vaikka kello oli jo yks yöllä! Respect. Matkaa oli tarkoitus jatkaa heti seuraavana päivänä, mutta päätettiin jäädä vielä toiseksi yöksi että saatiin molemmat levättyä kunnolla. DH:n talvirenkaista piti myös poistaa nastat ennen Saksan isoille teille siirtymistä, mikä ei käynytkään ihan sormia napsauttamalla…Lopulta löydettiin ittemme kuitenkin Rostockin satamasta, ja loppumatka meni kaasu pohjassa Verbieriä kohti!

Hola from sunny Verbier! We finally got here about a week ago after a little delay. On the night before we were supposed to leave I got really sick and wasn’t even able to think about the 3000 km drive for the next five days..Elias was starting to get really restless when not being able to leave, but finally after some days I was feeling strong enough for the long drive. We packed our Deer Hunter aka our car (that we chrashed really hard last summer with a deer) and started our journey! Since we had already missed the ferry that we had booked and all the plans we had for the trip our only goal was to get from Luleå to Gothenburg first. After a 17-hour drive through Sweden we finally got to the destination and to our friends’ house. They had dinner with wine ready for us, even it was 1 o’clock at night! So amazing. Our plan was to continue the trip next day but we decided to stay for one more night to get good rest. We also had to take off the spikes from DH’s winter tires which are not allowed on the autobahhn in Germany. It was a good and cheap idea but way worse to do than what we had thought…Anyway finally we found ourselves from the harbour in Rostock and after that it was just to press the pedal to the metal and gas to Verbier!

Vähän jännitti miten meidän auto jaksaa koko matkan, mutta hyvin meni! Kilometrit jaettiin tasaisesti Elias 2400 – Laura 600…I was a bit nervous how our car is going to make this trip but it went really well! Split the kilometers equally Elias 2400 – Laura 600…

En tajua miten Elias on niin iloisen näkönen, nastojen vetäminen renkaista oli ihan kamalaa hommaa 😀 I can’t believe why Elias is looking so happy, to pull off the spikes from the tires was NOT fun!!

Meidän maisemaan ei vaan ikinä kyllästy! Never getting tired of the view from our house!

Tämä kausi on mulle kolmas kausi Verbierissä, ja Eliakselle neljäs. Meillä on myös sama kämppä kuin viime vuonna, ja fiilis oli aivan kun kotia tulisi kun ajeltiin viimeinen pätkä mutkikasta tietä ylös kylään. Ulkona oli melkein täysikuu, ja oli niin hienon näköistä kun kaikki lumiset vuoret loisti pimeässä. Ah ihanaa olla täällä! Meidän kämppikset Julia ja Cecilia oli mestoilla jo ennen meitä, ja kämppä oli pyntätty viimeisen päälle kynttilöillä ja tuoreet pullat paistu uunissa. Kyllä taas kelpas! Ensimmäiset pari päivää meni iisisti ottaen, työasioita säätäessä ja kavereita nähdessä. Työluvan saanti Sveitsissä käy suht helposti kun on työsopimus valmiina, mutta monta paperia saa silti täyttää. Ranskankielisellä alueella kun ollaan on kaikissa toimistoissa asioiminen usein myös hyvin hidasta. Mutta nyt on työlupa jälleen taskussa, ja parasta on, että sillä saa neljän laakson eli koko Verbierin ja siihen liittyvien muiden alueiden kausikortin puoleen hintaan!

This season is going to be my third and Elias’ fourth in Verbier. We are also staying in the same apartment than last season so it really felt like coming home when driving up the curvy road up to the village. It was so beautiful when it was almost full moon and it looked like all the snowy mountains were glowing in the dark! Our roommates Julia and Cecilia were already home and they had made the whole house really cosy with candles and Julia was even baking. How nice it was! The first days in Verbier were quite easy, just going around seeing friends and fixing work stuff. It’s quite easy to get a work permit in Switzerland if you have a work contract but you still need to fill a lot of papers and go to different offices. Which in the french speaking area are not always that fast…But the best thing with the work permit is that you get the Four Valleys season pass half price!

Oli huippua päästä mäkeen, vaikka lunta täällä ei tosiaan paljoa ole. Rinteet kuitenkin on olleet paremmassa kunnossa kuin varmaan koskaan aikaisemmin. Ekat päivät meni ympäriinsä kruisaillessa sekä uusiin suksiin ja siteisiin totutellessa. Rinteiden ulkopuolelta ei aivan hirveästi laskettavaa löydy, mutta pieniä kivoja droppeja löytyy sieltä täältä, ja vielä ilman betonista alastuloa! Laskutouhujen lisäksi ollaan käyty kiipeilemässä, kerran Saxonissa sisähallissa ja kerran ulkona Verbierin lähellä. Niin hauskaa hommaa! Oon täysin aloittelija niissä hommissa, mutta onneksi kaverit on aika paljon taitavampia niin saa paljon neuvoja.

It was so much fun to ski again even though there is very little snow here at the moment. Suprisingly the pistes are in a really good shape which makes cruising around super fun. It’s also good for me to do some piste skiing to get used to my new skis and bindings! There’s not too much to do off-piste but we managed to find some fun mini cliffs to jump that didn’t have concrete landings 😀 Besides skiing have we been doing some climbing both in an indoor hall in Saxon and outdoor close to Verbier. Super fun! I’m a total rookie with climbing but I’m lucky to have friends that are really good at it.

Sisähalli Saxonissa oli iso ja tosi hieno, kuvassa ei näy toista hallia mikä oli lähes pelkästään boulderiseinää. The indoor hall in Saxon was so big and good! They also had another hall mostly for bouldering.

Ekalla seinällä, jännää kiivetä ylös ku on valmiiksi jo niin korkealla 😀 The first wall, scary to climb up when you are already so high up!

Huippuja reittejä, mutta skilssejä tarvii aika paljon lisää vielä. So many good routes but I really need to get better skills 😀

Menneellä viikolla saatiin myös Norjan Tuleva Freeride Tähti ja meidän kaveri Sindre Holtet kylään, ja meininki on ollut tosi hauska muutenkin. Työt alkaa pääasiassa jouluviikolla, niin ollaan ehditty laskea paljon, mutta käydä myös affella. Kylässä ja mäessä on ollut tosi hiljaista, mikä on tosi ihanaa! Ensi viikolla onkin kylä täynnä turreja ja päivät täynnä töitä, että parempi nauttia näistä päivistä. Pieni haikki ehdittiin tehdä myös Mont Gelén huipulle ja laskea yks kuru alas, maisemat jees ja lumi tosi kovaa. Hyvä availla keuhkoja ja tottua korkeuteen, ja oli muutenki kivaa “tehhä jotain”! Sen vuoren päälle kulkee myös hissi, mutta nyt näyttää ainakin siltä, että sen avaamiseen menee aikaa vähäisen lumimäärän takia. Vähäinen lumimäärä ei itseä niinkään stressaa, laskeminen on silti hauskaa, ja kun on koko kauden hollilla niin ennemmin tai myöhemmin kääntyy kelitkin paremmiksi! Ja sitä paremmaksi laskijaksi tulee mitä p*skemmissa oloissa laskee.. 😉

In the middle of the week came Norway’s Next Freeride Star and our good friend Sindre Holtet for a visit and it has been so much fun! All the work starts mostly on the christmas week so we have had a lot of time to ski but also to enjoy after ski. It’s been really quiet in the village and on the mountain as well which is so nice. Next week is going to be a totally different thing when the holidays start so it’s better to enjoy these days! We did also a little hike to the top of Mont Gelé and skied down one couloir. Nice views as always but really hard snow. But it was good to open the lungs and get used to the altitude. Also really fun to “get to do something”! It looks like it’s going to take a while for them to open the lift to the top of that mountain, so little snow at the moment. In a way I don’t really get stressed about the snow situation, skiing is so much fun anyway and when you’re staying for the whole season you know it’s going to be good at some point! And hard and bad conditions make the best skiers right 😉

Harvoin näkee Mt Geléä noin kuivana, meiän laskema kurukin katoaa kivikkoon. Never seen Mt Gelé so dry, hard to even see the couloir from all the rocks!
