Heippahei helmikuu ja Verbier! Kisojen jälkeen on aika (kuukausi??!) vierähtänyt vauhdilla, ja laskukelit ovat ehtineet kivikko-jää-kumpare keleistä eeppiseen pyydalaskuun ja takaisin kevätloskaan. Aika siis tehdä pientä tilannepäivitystä tämän kylän suunnilta! Kisojen jälkeen alkoi kotivuorta helliä kuivat ja aurinkoiset kelit, eikä tammikuun isosta dumpista ollut muuta kuin muistoja ja instabangereita jäljellä. Pääkopassa alkoi tuntua siltä, että maiseman vaihto tekisi hyvää. Tarkoitus oli kisata Engadinissa ja Courmayerissa 3* kisoissa heti peräkkäisinä viikkoina, mutta huonojen olosuhteiden takia molemmat kisat siirrettiin maaliskuulle. Kalenteri näyttikin yhtäkkiä tyhjää, ja työrintamalla oli myös hiljaista. Siis tekemistä kehiin ja auton nokka kohti Engelbergiä ja kylän suomipossea morjestamaan!

Hello February and Verbier! Since the Verbier freeride week has time (a whole month?!) gone super fast and skiing conditions from rocky to bumpy and from epic powder to spring slush. So time to make a little update of what’s going on in this village! After the comps in January the weather got really sunny and dry on this mountain and the only thing left from the big dump was just memories and instabangers. It started to feel that a little get away from Verbier would be something. I was supposed to compete in two 3* FWQ comps in Engadin and Courmayer but both got moved to March since the conditions were so bad. Suddenly my calender looked really empty and it was pretty quiet at work as well. So time to have some fun, hit the road and drive to Engelberg to see the Finnish gang there!

Kyllä räntä- ja vesisateessakin voi naurattaa. Despite the rain skiing can still be fun.

Mulle reissu Engelbergiin oli eka ikinä, joten oli hauskaa päästä näkemään Sveitsin toinen true freeride mesta. Huippua oli myös päästä näkemään riiraideripariskunta Jenni Kaipaista & Jussi Hynnistä, jotka kämppis MarjaBärin ja koirakaveri Nyytin kanssa ystävällisesti majoitti minut ja Eliaksen hoiviinsa neljäksi päiväksi! Lumitilanne Engelbergissä ei ollut sen parempi kuin Verbierissä, ja sääennuste näytti huonolta. Se ei tosin paljoa kinostellut, kun oli niin mukavaa päästä näkemään kaikkia tyyppejä ja vaihtaa Verpparin ruotsikupla hetkeksi suomalaiseen kuplaan. Reissu alkoi suomalaisissa merkeissä suoraan bilettämällä, ja olikin huippua törmätä heti ekana iltana muuhun suomiposseen Ajelutiimin pojista Verpparin kaksoisolento Lindaan paikallisessa menomestassa. Hauska ilta, tosin shottikisoissa on omalta osalta vielä aika paljon parannettavaa seuraavaa kertaa varten!

It was first time for me in Engelberg so it was really nice to get to see the other ”true freeride” place in Switzerland. Super fun also to get to see my Finnish friends, the freeride couple Jenni Kaipainen-Jussi Hynninen, who together with their roommates MarjaBerry and Nyyti-the-dog took really good care of me and Elias for four days! The snow conditions in Engelberg were not any better than in Verbier and the forecast was not looking promising. I didn’t really care about that so much though, it was so nice to change Verbier’s Swedish bubble to Finnish bubble and to see all the friends there. The trip started with really Finnish vibes when on the first night we went out to meet all the other Finns from Ajelutiimi boyz to my fake twin Linda at the local bar. Super fun night but I really need to practice my shot drinking skills before the next time haha!

Eka laskupäivä aukeni tosi harmaana ja sateisena, ja mietiskeltiin minkä hintaiseen hissilippuun meidän budjetti antaa myötä. Hinnat ovat Engelbergissä korkeat, ja päädyttiin maksamaan yksi nousu Brunnin puolelle. Lasku oli heittämällä elämäni kallein lasku, mutta oli meillä Jennin ja Eliaksen kanssa kyllä mukavaa senkin edestä. Hyvä syy ansaita affe kun on käynyt sukset jalassa ainakin vähän aikaa, haha. Seuraavana päivänä päädyttiin sijoittamaan puolen päivän lippuun. Keli oli täyttä sinkkiä, vettä tuli kaatamalla yli kahdessa tonnissa ja lumi oli aika liisteristä ja vetistä. Urheasti vedettiin kuitenkin monta laskua, ja oli meillä kyllä tosi hauskaakin. Jostain syystä kun keli ja olosuhteet on aivan kamalat menee koko homma hupaisaksi ja kaikki vaan naurattaa. Kolmantena päivänä satsasin koko päivän lippuun, ja suuntasin vanhojen Eberin kausilaisten aka Ajelutiimin Kuutin ja Tanelin seurassa pelimestoille. Pilvet piiritti vuorta aika tiukasti iltapäivään asti, kunnes vihdoin bluebird lensi esiin ja mieki pääsin näkemään missä olin! Ylimmät hissit oli suljettu, mutta muutama mukava lasku aurinkoisessa kelissä saatiin. Lumi oli ylempänä muutaman käännöksen verran hyvää, sen jälkeen eteen sattuikin kaikkea sketsin, crustin ja puuromössön väliltä. Hauska päivä sekin kuitenkin. Mäkien profiilit oli tosi hyvän näköisiä ja droppeja löytyi tosi paljon, hyvillä lumilla varmasti super hauskaa laskettavaa!

The first skiing day was really gray and rainy and we were not quite sure how much we’d be ready to pay for the lift pass. Engelberg is expensive so we ended up paying just one way up on the Brunni side. The most expensive run in my life but we had really fun with Jenni and Elias! Also well deserved after ski when you have had your skis on even for a little while haha. The next day we bought half day passes even the weather was not any better. It was pouring rain in over 2,000m, super foggy and the snow was really sticky and wet. But we kept on skiing and had really fun again. Sometimes when the weather and the conditions get super sh*tty it turns everything really hilarious and you just can’t stop laughing. On the third day I went for a full day pass and headed up with Kuutti and Taneli who are former Engelberg locals. It was quite a thick cloud around the mountain until the afternoon came with a bluebird. So nice for me to finally get to see where I was! All the higher lifts were closed but we got a few nice runs in the sun. The snow was really variable from powder to super wet and heavy snow but still another fun day. The terrain looks like that with good snow there’s a lot of drops and other fun stuff to do.

Vaikkei laskujen puolesta Engelberg ollut kovin järisyttävä tällä kerralla, oli seura sitäkin järisyttävämpää! Verbieriin verrattuna kylä on tosi erilainen, mutta tosi symppis. Ymmärtää kyllä miksi porukka siellä viihtyy, ja suomalaispossella vaikuttaa olevan hyvä yhteinen meininki kylässä. Oli myös mukavaa palata takaisin Verbieriin pienen tuulettelun jälkeen. Kunnon viikon mittainen lumimyrsky saapui myös sopivasti, ja reilu viikko vedettiin pelkkää pyydaa. Heittämättä kauden parhaimmat laskut, ja vihdoin ”oikean talven” tuntu. Norjalaisia poikia saapui myös meille kyläilemään ja kuvaamaan tulevaa leffaa, jossa Elias on myös osana. Täydellisesti ajoitettu dumppi mullekin töiden osalta; kun mäet alkoi olla puhki laskettuja ja aurinko lämmitellä enemmän, alkoi brittien hiihtoloma. Joka täällä merkkaa turkiksia, tiukkoja toppahousuja ja kasapäin ihmisiä mäessä kellä ei ole mitään hajua mitä ne tekee. Ja paljon töitä myös, hyvä viikko tehdä pätäkkää kun porukkaa on liikaa ja laskukelit kuin huhtikuussa. Hurjaa miten parissa päivässä kelit heitti takaisin tosi lämpimiksi, tätä vauhtia ei maaliskuussa enää paljoa lasketa. Pelottavaa kun kelit on niin kummalliset, tekee lumesta tosi arvaamatonta ja sketsiä. Pelottaa myös ajatella, että tätäkö talvet on oikeasti nyt ja mitähän tulevaisuudessa tapahtuu 🙁 Noh ei auta vajota epätoivoon! Ehkä tämäkin kausi ehtii vielä kääntyä oikeaksi talveksi, sillä välin me jibbaillaan kevätloskassa parkissa!

Even though skiingwise Engelberg wasn’t that amazing this time was the company more than that for sure! The village is really different to Verbier but I can totally understand why people like it there, and the Finnish gang is super fun there too. It felt nice to get back home to Verbier too after seeing and doing something else. When I got back came a big snow storm too that lasted for over a week and we finally got to ski real pow for days. We also got some Norwegian friends for a visit who were filming with Elias for their upcoming movie. It was a perfect timed dump, after the sun got out and everything started to get tracked it was time for the winter holiday for British people. Which here means fur, tight skiing pants and a lot of people on the slopes not having any idea what they are doing. Perfect time to work a lot and get some cash while waithing for the next storm. Crazy though how fast the weather has turned really warm, if this continues we won’t have anything left to ski in March..Scary how the temperatues and weather keeps changing so much, it makes the snow really unpredictable and scetchy. Scary also to think if this is soon going to be permanent and what happens to the winters in the future 🙁 Getting desperate doesn’t really help so better to keep on believing that this season will see a real winter again. Until that we keep jibbing in the park in spring vibes!
